Who is Hami Kaynak?
 

Captain Fevzi, who was one of the most famous captains in neighborhood of beautiful Bosphorus became a "father" with the newcomer, A. Hami Kaynak, in 1905. From this date this young boy was addicted to maritime, also made his followers so...

After finishing his education in the Maritime Academy, he worked for the Coast Guard and The Fire Department of the Turkish Navy. In 1930, he established the modern maintenance shipyards on the field which belonged to the Coast Guard. (Now there lies the Museum of Rahmi Koç)

In the year of 1931, he took the surname "Kaynak" with the legislation of the family name law. At the moment the officers were insisting him to chose a "surname" in the boatyard  he was busy with a welding job, and told them his family name as "Kaynak" (1)

After he founded the "Coast Guard Shipyards", his interest to radios led him to the establishment of Izmir Radio Station. Later on, with his resignation from the Coast Guard, he started his own Machine Shop with a few lathes. He also managed the boatyard Of "Moda Yelken Klübü" (Moda Yacht Club) simultaneously.

With the encouragement of the 5th President of young TR Celal Bayar, four "Christ Craft"  "BAYAR I", "BAYAR II", "RÜZGAR" and "YAZGAN" were imported from USA, and totally entrusted to Hami Kaynak. The "RÜZGAR"; a totally flawless "Lycoming" made, with an inline 8 Cyl. 185 Hp engines, 18' boat running 58 mph, was a glorious symbol of prestige also took him in the front of Atatürk.

Atatürk, heard the rumors about Hami Kaynak and his desire to speed, ordered as “bring this crazy young man and his flying boat to my sight!' After taking orders, Hami polished the boat for three days, left "Moda Deniz Klübü" and started his cruise to "Florya Deniz Köskü" with his throttles wide open. Eventually he arrived near to the "Köşk", he forced the beautiful "RÜZGAR" to full throttle, and she attained its maximum speed. After attracting all the attention, he could barely comprehend the panic on the shore when he put the gear astern, near the dock. The scream of the officier”You! You were about to hit Atatürk!!!’ not only petrified him, also made his lips to sore... ATA had just got far from the shore to swim.

Afterwards, Hami Kaynak managed the cutter “IPAR" with Atatürk, Celal Bayar and Bal Mahmut to the Greek horizon.

In 1945 with Fikret Bayraktar he constructed the "ARMA Deniz Slipways" in Büyükdere.

In 1950 he rented the field on the shore of Büyükdere, which was belonging to Armenian Church at that time. On this field, he continued to maintain U.S.A TUSLOG's "J-Boat" and "LCMs" also "M/Y HAIWATHA of American Embassy" and NATO Izmir Base’s “Commander's Service Boat" annually.


In 1957 he forced to design and manufacture boats by his son, Metin. The first boat was sold to the "American Radio Base”, followed by the one sold to Zeki Başaran (the owner of famous movie center "Konak") and the one to Military Attaché of USA Embassy, Mr Joe. (Göksu Brook, below)

The fore-runners (or prototypes) produced with the idea of "Mass Production" were owned by a few very lucky gentlemen Pamir Bezmen, Nejat Eczacibasi, Haldun Simavi, Selahattin Beyazit and Albert Kohen.


In the year of 1969 "Starboat Hami Kaynak Shipyards" under a 5000m2 roof started in action. The dock immediately introduced two 1000 tones coasters "UZUNOGLU" and "BEDRI INCE" to the Bosphorous.

During many years, he made countless calculations. He provided 100's of unique speedboats to the notables of Türkiye and marine lovers.

The "Master" of the Türkiye's Maritime, Mr A. Hami Kaynak, led his shipyards until 1997, to the minute he passed away.
